"Twister#1"
4x5 lino proof print |
It all began when I was going through photography withdrawal, missing the magic of traditional darkroom printing. For some reason I picked up a piece of linoleum and just drew and carved an image from my childhood. When I made the proof print it was magic, just like looking through the viewfinder and trying to determine how that first print will look.

So I tried it again... bigger and more geared towards the 1st block's results. I was thrilled about the instant image, the graphic qualities and the repeatability of the image which freed me from the sacred "one shot drawing" that often an artist will limit themselves for fear they will loose what they like thus far. The funny thing is that I began a print proof bound book (like a sketchbook only nicer) and got in a habit of designing, carving and printing the blocks just for the fun of it- never really printing multiples. This became my lino sketchbook where I was determined to fill the pages with these "one shot proofs" to teach myself how to print.

Over time this image returned, rebuilding itself repeatedly in a series of panels that were carved into blocks for relief prints. The 27 versions of that proof sketch became the whimsical solo exhibit "Twist of Fate" a surreal yet very personal body of work that marked a huge turning point in my life. Each piece was themed after a chapter of my past experiences paralleled with the sarcasms of weathering a storm.
