Tools of the trade |
This week took me from my random variety of small sketchbook entries of anything from anywhere, to an intensive focus of "thoughts on paper" to share with a client on a future project we are working on.

"the lil' helper" conte and charcoal on paper |
It was my intention to make a collection of drawings, that were vague enough to not get locked into a precise character, yet enough to flesh out a type or identifiable personality. Furthermore I tried to have all the "look of the collection" formulas similar (Chalk, conte, charcoal- soft media on a ink washed background). I thought with all the variety in personalities, I could cut down the confusion by linking the format in the limitations. Also this would keep the impression more vague and sketchy/loose so that the client didn't feel committed to all the drawings detail or efforts. I felt this approach would help the client to have something catch the eye (like when you meet somebody but haven't got to know them)
then discover if they were intrigued enough to want to see more... like a movie trailer. A quick glimpse to be instinctively engaged with their interest. The quick sketch above (lil helper) is one of 10 widely varied possibilities for the main character of a children's book.
