The disadvantages of being a traveling artist

A few of you who have followed this blog are wondering why no image 2 entries ago (thought I may be having problems with my blog). Those who know why have stated that I should put an entry on all my blogs sharing the event but I have written nothing thus far until now as my blogs tend to be more about the process of making art. So today I will write of sketchbooks from a different perspective. The disadvantage of being a traveling artist is when your possessions leave the safety of your own controlled environment.
In the last 7 days I have become separated from the sketchbook I so often carry with me at all times. My 1st reaction was the anxiety due to the loss of hours of research notes or reference sketches on 3 projects I am just beginning (my equal to loosing a planner or smart phone). As the news spread among my circle of friends and the potential employees who's projects it affected, I realized while the dread of starting over with shorter deadlines was stressful, I had a greater loss. In that book were my personal (bound) postcards of memories... sketches of a post birdhouse project celebration, a day with a friend in Tacoma after visiting a museum, portraits of the last days with friends or family who have passed away. Just like those who keep a diary, scrapbook or photo album, my sketchbooks where where I store cherished visual memories and lessons in life or art and I am very saddened that the collection of image souvenirs are no longer in my possession. Ode to the little red sketchbook...
