Week #3 The 5 minute mass drawing

5 min portrait- line sketch
5 min portrait-mass sketch
This week I concentrated on working with a chunk of material (mainly graphite) about 1/2" long, on its side, in order to get away from line turning more towards mass drawing in an additive manner. One would think with all the charcoal I work with, it would have been my chosen medium but I needed to get out of my comfort zone and I don't ever draw in graphite squares... have had them forever! Perhaps I am getting used to the 5 min time but by sense of urgency to draw quickly seems to dissipate with each week finding myself looking at the stopwatch at 4- 4.5 min thinking 'It must be time by now'- not good.
What I did discover is that mass drawing lended well to some subjects better rendered than others for that way to sketch (i.e. drawing perspective plains). It also brought my focus more towards the graphic shape. This lent more toward my examining composition as well as neg/pos space and the grouping or separation of object versus shadow or light.
