Last year I did plein air paintings, on 9x12 gesso boards as direct painting, ala prima works. I worked on site 3-4 hours (or returned for 2nd session) leaving only edge work and perhaps a bit of glazing to finish the work as is. This year the guidelines to which I govern these efforts are geared differently as I hope to use as color, composition references (sketches) for larger works. Hence the work is faster and the color match immediate and rough with less attention to detail. The disadvantage... I don't have that pretty little work at the end.
Even though the on site panels are my sketches, I have also began a 3.5 x 5 book that documents the events, including a sketch of the panel I painted. It would seem that there are repeat offenders and return sites of which if I document my conditions (like the haystack paintings) I could learn a little deeper what it is I am changing from study to study and why. Along with weather conditions and time of day, these entries have tiny comp drawings which I try to sketch from memory of the days efforts. I believe it is a good exercise to "test myself" as to what I recall and how much of it is ingrained or retained hours later.
