For many reasons I have become more deeply recommited to my sketchbooks in 2013. Often times my investments in these books have become longer studies from the 60 minute portrait session to the 20 hour master copy... no wonder I didn't get my 2012 goal of completing 12 sketchbooks accomplished! In 2013 I will continue to fill pages in these places but in addition to this journey, I am returning to what I consider the foundations of sketching: regular commitment, incomplete drawings, abbreviated information, and quicker deadlines.

Last week my goal was to do 10-2 min drawings a day for 5 days out of the week. I tried a different theme each day so as to keep the challenge creative yet structured... it is the scientist in me that craves to work in formulas. In this exercise I confess that I haven't the luxery to push a drawing utensil across a surface to mindlessly slave away at the likeness of what is before me. When only having 2 minutes to sketch my subject it forces me to prioritize and edit each line as I am drawing. The quickness forces me to draw more instinctively which in turn lets me understand how I can better "get to the point" which always seems to be my kryptonite.
